What’s In A Name?

During my cannabis journey, I learned that cannabis and hemp were cultivated in ancient China and Taiwan. Dàmá means Cannabis Sativa in Chinese, and directly translates as “great numbness”. The word má has been used to describe the hemp plant since before the invention of writing five thousand years ago, and is pictorially based on how they used to dry the hemp by hanging it upside down from a ledge.

Historical Chinese text and archaeological finds indicate smoking rituals and medical uses for cannabis over 3000 years ago. At one point, it was so integral to life in China and Taiwan that it was considered one of The Five Grains, a group of five farmed crops that were very important in the agriculture of ancient China.

I found all of this fascinating, considering how taboo the plant is in modern China and Taiwan. I wanted to incorporate Dàmá in my cannabis company name as a nod to my heritage and its ancient relationship with the plant’s medicine.
